TypeAutomation: priced by execution

n8n is a workflow automation platform with built-in AI agents. It prices by monthly workflow executions, "regardless of complexity", and offers a standard self-hosted version on GitHub1.

Best for: Technical teams that want to replace glue software and manual hand-offs with workflows and AI agents they can host themselves.

Not the right fit for: Teams without anyone to build and maintain workflows.

How it works and is priced

An execution is a single run of a whole workflow, however many steps it contains. On the day we checked, the cloud Starter plan was €20 a month billed annually for 2,500 executions and Pro €50 for 10,000; the Business plan, at €667 a month for 40,000 executions, was available only self-hosted; Enterprise is priced by sales1.

Every cloud tier includes agents (in preview), an AI Agent node and AI steps, Model Context Protocol support and human approval for tool calls1.

What it replaces

n8n replaces the glue: per-user automation tools and the manual work of moving information between systems. The systems of record remain. Its main economic difference from SaaS is that cost follows executions rather than users, and that it can run on the company's own infrastructure.

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • An execution counts as one run of a whole workflow, however many steps it has.
  • Can run on the company’s own infrastructure.
  • AI Agent node, MCP support and human approval for tool calls on every cloud tier.

Limits

  • It automates between systems; the records still live in other software.
  • Workflows have to be designed and maintained by the customer.
  • The Business plan is self-hosted only, which needs operations capacity.

Choose another option if: You want the AI to hold and run the records, not connect the systems that do.

Pricing

Published. On the day we checked: Starter €20 and Pro €50 a month billed annually (2,500 and 10,000 executions); Business €667 a month self-hosted.

Questions to ask n8n

  • How many executions would our planned workflows use each month?
  • What does running the self-hosted edition require of our team?
  • Which licence terms apply to the self-hosted version for our use?
