Retool is a platform for building internal applications, workflows and AI agents. Companies use it to build tools around their own processes in place of niche SaaS products and spreadsheets1.

Best for: Companies with developers that want to replace niche SaaS and spreadsheets with internal tools and agents they build.

Not the right fit for: Companies without developers, or that want to stop paying per user.

How it is priced

Builders and internal users are priced separately per month. On the day we checked, the Team plan was €9 per builder and €5 per internal user billed annually, and Business €46 and €14; Enterprise is custom. The free plan covers up to five users. AI use draws on pooled credits (250 a month on Free up to 10,000 on Enterprise), and agents are billed hourly, separately from credits, with up to 20 free agent hours a month on every tier1.

Self-hosting, including air-gapped deployment, is available only on Enterprise. Audit logs, rich permissions, Git source control and single sign-on are not included on the free plan1.

What it replaces

Retool replaces point tools and spreadsheets with software the company builds. The company keeps the logic, but still pays per user and must maintain every application it creates.

Published evidence

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • Replaces point tools with applications built around the company’s own processes.
  • Free tier for small teams and published prices.
  • Enterprise can run self-hosted or air-gapped.

Limits

  • Priced per builder and per internal user, so seat costs remain.
  • Rich permissions, audit logs and SSO are not on the free plan.
  • The company builds and maintains every tool.

Choose another option if: You lack developers or want a ready-made system rather than a toolkit.

Pricing

Published. On the day we checked: Team builder €9 and internal user €5 a month annually; Business builder €46 and internal user €14; Enterprise custom.

Questions to ask Retool

  • How many builders and internal users would we need, and what does that cost annually?
  • How many agent hours would our planned agents use?
  • Do we need Enterprise for self-hosting, audit logs or SSO?
